Over 8000 learners join CLAN groups each year. The majority are people from priority groups including: young people, unemployed adults, people with disabilities, people with English as a second language, those living in disadvantaged areas, those in low paid low skill jobs, people with health issues and people with dyslexia.
The funding we receive is used to employ project workers working in all parts of the city, in Community Learning and Development and Further Education colleges as well as others with specialist briefs such as Workplace Learning, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL),Health and Literacy, and the Voluntary Sector.
The CLAN Project Worker can advise on local learning opportunities and help people to access them.
If you know of people who could be interested in getting into learning:
• talk to them about the opportunity to improve their skills
• ask them if they would like a literacy tutor to contact them
• reassure them that adult learning is not like school
Let them know that:
• learners decide what they want to learn and work at their own pace
• they can learn in small friendly groups
• learning can take place in a variety of locations in Edinburgh
• lots of people need help with reading, writing and numbers
How to make a referral
• Ask permission to pass their contact details to the CLAN Project Worker
• The CLAN Project Worker will arrange an initial meeting with the service user to discuss what they would like to learn, their literacy level and what services are available
